First, there are 2 Wild Cards to announce. Jeremy Wurtzman and Todd Widom are in. Jeremy, recall, is a native of Rochester. Probably 5 -6 years ago... he was at the top of the Eastern section (USTA) rankings for juniors. He won multiple Easter bowls as a junior. He then went on to a great college career, with a great '03-04 season ranked #3 and selected All American. He has been playing the futures events this year and has done well, with multiple SF and 1 final appearance. He is on the list of 'the best' that developed in the upstate New York junior program. Todd had 2 All American years at U of Miami in '02-03. Todd has a few futures titles and recently made the quarters in Lexington, he also made the 2nd round of an International series ATP event this year. Todd had a few noteworthy clay titles from his junior days as well, including the USTA 18s Clay Court. Both of these guys are in a large group of Americans (between 20-23) fighting their way in the profession, too many out there so this is a good opportunity for these guys. Also, worth noting some results this week. Brian Baker, Nathan Healey, and Bobby Reynolds all made the 2nd round of the US Open series event in D.C. ... good results for all of them who all have done well this year. Bobby is still in it with a win over Mello ('03 Binghamton participant). Udomchoke seems to be having a week off after the Challenger win in Granby last week... wonder where he is and what his routine is like (if indeed a 'week off'), we'll have to find that one out when he gets here. Sela (also coming), won a Challenger last week in Lexington and is still in the Challenger in Vancouver this week. Combined, we've got some guys who are in the middle of some hot streaks coming here. Might be unprecedented to have this many guys having this many quality wins within a month of being here. One more thing... the pace at this point is fast and exciting. You may have noticed more coverage this year. We've got billboards, newspaper/TV ads... press conferences, TV/radio interviews. Hit the TVs yesterday and radio this morning and tomorrow. All kinds of stuff going on at the park, tents going up.. trucks dropping off supplies and all kinds of equipment, hammers and saws going. Spiedie Fest on the horizon along with our sign-in, final look at Wildcards, and the release of the qualifying draw. You just go to the park and feel the all the stuff going on and look forward to 10am on Sat! |
