| An update on the tennis scene from the local view. The clay season has finished. Yet another entertaining 2 weeks of French. The French really shows the diversity of the sport... guys lasting through 2 weeks of best of 5 on clay is alot different than best of 3 on other surfaces. The momentum changes on the clay are an added bonus too. We had the luxury of the Tennis Channel this clay season and that is tough to beat for even the mild fan. As far as the French itself, not a great outing for the former Binghamton players, kind of follows suit with the results of the Americans. Tipsarevic is the highlight, with a 2nd round appearance after beating the 17th seed Hrbaty in the 1st round. Benneteau was on TV while he got drilled in the face, something you don't see too often, and he was also mentioned a few other times.
On the local scene, the high school boys finished up with a pretty good season. Ended up being a pretty good crop this season. Chris Nosky finished with the Section honors, but lost in the 1st round of states. Considering years past getting 1 real prospect per year from the area, this year had Nosky along with Dave Warren, and Kyle Ungvarsky making states and a couple of others that had a little bad luck in their attempts, but defeated the state qualifiers during the season. None of the crew were undefeated going into the states, which shows some depth hopefully. Ungvarsky won his 1st round in states, along with doubles team of Jamie Young and Dan Shuma. Scott Lowenstein/Matt Bourey and Jeff Gao/Steve Panosian also teamed to get to states with the latter getting to the consolation draw final. |
