Capdeville First Back-Back Winner,
De Voest/Lipsky Capture Doubles

Two time champ Capdeville

Paul Capdeville became the fist back-to back winner at the LG&T Tennis Challenger today when he battled through 2 tiebreakers to defeat Kevin Anderson of South Africa 7-6(7), 7-6(11). Anderson had his chances, having had 4 set points in the first set tiebreaker, including a 6-3 advantage, but Capdeville fought them off, including a 124 mile per hour serve from Anderson that Capdeville muscled back to take the tiebreak 9-7.

Losing the first set seemed to inspire Anderson, who came out and broke Capdeville’s serve in the first game of the second set, for the first service break of the match. Capdeville got the break back with Anderson with a 3-2 lead, to even the second set 3 all. Both held serve for the remainder of the second set, which included many nervous moments for Anderson, including a 5 deuce game with Anderson serving at 3-4 that included 5 aces, including 3 in a row to finish the game and even the score at 4-4.

The second set tiebreak was a battle, with Capdeville making his life difficult with 2 double faults. Each player also had 2 aces, and multiple chances to win the set. Capdeville had 5 match points in the second set, before he was able to convert with a 106 mph serve up the tee that fooled Anderson. Anderson had 2 set points in the second set, at 7-8 and 9-10 but each time Capdeville prevailed.

Capdeville is the first back to back winner in Binghamton. There has been 1 other 2 time winner, Takao Suzuki of Japan captured the title in 1998 and 2000. Both Capdeville and Anderson will be headed to the US Open at the end of August, with Capdeville already qualified for entry into the main draw, and Anderson entering the qualifying rounds.

DeVoest and Lipsky doubles champs

In the doubles final, the number 1 seeded team of Rik De Voest (RSA) and Scott Lipsky (USA) defeated Carsten Ball (AUS) and Kaes Van’t Hof (USA) in a match that also featured no service breaks in the first set, leading to a first set tiebreak. Lipsky and De Voest prevailed in that tiebreak 7-2. The second set went to 3-3, before Devoest/Lipsky pulled off the first service break in the match to take a 4-3 lead. De Voest/Lipsky managed to take good care of their serve, giving up only 3 points to Ball/Van’t Hof in the second set. Final score De Voest/Lipsky defeated Ball Van’t Hof 7-6(2), 6-4.
