Top Seed Istomin Advances
Top seed Denis Istomin (UZB) advanced in the LG&T Tennis Challenger, prevailing over a scrappy Go Soeda of Kanagawa, Japan, 6-4, 6-3 in a second round match. Soeda is currently ranked 192 in the world, and has a career best ranking of 106 achieved in February of this year. Istomin, born in Russia and currently residing in Tashkent Uzbekistan, used his 6’ 2” 183 pound frame to generate a big serve and big ground strokes. Istomin is currently ranked 67 and holds a career best ATP ranking of 57 (July 2009).
In a continuation of last nights match that was stopped at 1 set all due to darkness, Laurynas Grigelis (LTU) defeated Jerzy Janovich (POL) 7-6(5), 6-7(5), 6-3. Seventeen year old Grigelis fell into the main draw as the “lucky loser” from the qualifier when Marcos Baghdatis withdrew from the tournament.
Last year’s winner Paul Capdeville (CHI), the #2 seed is in action in tomorrow’s feature match at 5:30 against qualifier Igor Sijsling (NED)
